Patrick Hamilton’s chiller, first performed in 1939 but set in the often fondly remembered world of the supposedly respectable Victorians, still has the capacity to shock.
Today a man no longer has the right to physically or mentally abuse his wife but in the late 19th century this kind of treatment within a marriage was acceptable. Bella Manningham, a young, typically submissive Victorian wife, thinks she is going mad because she can’t explain the mysterious disappearances of familiar objects, sounds of footsteps in an uninhabited part of the family home, and the ghostly flickering of the living room gas lights.
Gas Light was an immense hit on its release, and it is one of the longest-running non-musicals in
Broadway history. It remains a perennial favourite with both repertory and amateur theatre companies. It has also twice been made into a film for one of which Ingrid Bergman was awarded an Oscar for best actress.
