Chess

By Peter Shaffer
Directed by John Smith

This award-winning drama is a powerful example of everything a good play should be. When first staged at the National Theatre in the 1970s it was considered way ahead of its time and “a power house of a play”. Critically acclaimed throughout its lifetime, it has recently been revived in the West End and on Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, in the lead role of Alan Strang.

Psychiatrist Martin Dysart is brought the most challenging case of his career by his friend, a magistrate, Hesther Saloman . Alan Strang seems like a normal seventeen year old. His life appears routine and his family loving. However, Alan’s passion for horses and an encounter with stable hand Jill, has led him to behave in the most devastating way. Only Dysart seems able to grasp the answer to this psychological puzzle.

Full of wonderful imagery and stunning set pieces, this play manages to amaze its audience whenever it is performed.
