With lyrics by Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and The Lion King) and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA and the creators of Mamma Mia, the story involves the romantic triangle between two players in the world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.
Set during the 1980s’ Cold War, Chess uses the backdrop of the world chess tournament to play out the game. From the mountains of Merano, Switzerland, to the exotic temples of Bangkok, the lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves and fall foul of each others’ plottings, to the pulse of this monumental score.
When last presented at this theatre in 1994, Chess played to packed houses and received great critical acclaim. With such huge international hits as ‘One Night in Bangkok’ and the lyrical ‘I Know Him So Well’, this show is sure to prove as popular today as it did when last staged.
Now, a talented cast of over 40 and a large orchestra and backstage team will reinvent the show for the 21st Century!
